New survey finds nearly 60% of Americans are ‘too broke to have fun’ this year

A recent survey reveals that financial constraints are significantly impacting the recreational lives of people across the United States. Nearly 60% of Americans report that they currently lack the necessary funds to make enjoyable plans for the upcoming summer season. Rising costs for essential services and goods continue to put a strain on household entertainment budgets.

According to a study of more than 5,000 residents, approximately 57% of participants identified cost and budget as the primary barriers to having a good time. This financial stress has led to what some are calling a fun drought across the country. Approximately 48% of the total population feels a general lack of fun in their daily lives.

The data highlights a concerning trend regarding time and leisure management in 2026. Roughly 12% of respondents admitted they cannot remember the last time they had a completely free day to themselves. High prices at the gas pump and inside restaurants are the main factors driving this sense of economic exhaustion.

External economic factors play a major role in these findings as fuel prices continue to climb. Following recent international conflicts in February, Americans have spent an estimated $45 billion in additional fuel costs. Many drivers now face gasoline prices reaching $5 per gallon, which limits their ability to travel for leisure.

Restaurant dining has also become a significant luxury for many households. Menu prices have surged more than 30% since 2020 due to rising labor costs and supply chain inflation. Because families must spend more on necessities, they have less capital available for social experiences or dining out with friends.

The survey, funded by Dave & Buster’s and conducted by Talker Research, underscores the psychological benefits of recreation. Results show that 72% of people feel less stressed when they engage in fun activities. Additionally, 57% of participants feel more motivated and 56% feel closer to their loved ones after having a positive experience.
