HUSBAND, 79, TOOK BEAUTY SCHOOL LESSON TO STYLE WIFE’S HAIR
A 79-year-old man walked into an Alberta beauty school without an appointment to learn how to do his wife’s hair and makeup.
The man, who asked to remain anonymous, visited Delmar College of Hair and Esthetics in Red Deer on April 22, 2021. He had been married for 50 years, and his wife’s eyesight was failing.
She had been burning herself while curling her hair. He wanted to learn to do her hair and makeup himself, People reported.
College director Carrie Hannah remembered what he told her. “He started to explain that his wife was struggling with her vision right now, and was struggling to curl her own hair and was burning herself. He really wanted to help her,” Hannah told CityNews Edmonton.
An impromptu lesson
He had no appointment. He simply asked whether the college offered courses.
“We sure are,” Hannah replied, K-BZK reported.
Hannah arranged a lesson on the spot. A student used a mannequin to teach him curling-iron technique and mascara application, and the session lasted about an hour, The Week reported.
He learned how to curl short hair for volume, how to protect skin from burns and how to apply mascara. Hannah said he was a quick study.
It was a focused session on hair styling and makeup, not a full cosmetology course. Before he left, he got a quick trim.
“He genuinely cared. He knows his wife always cared about her appearance, and he wanted to help her,” Hannah told CityNews.
A student named Britney Smith shared photos of the lesson on her professional Facebook page.
What the staff said
Hannah called the husband “very brave” for asking for help. She said the college team was “touched by his devotion.”
He also showed staff pictures of his wife. The Week quoted Hannah’s account to SWNS of what he talked about: how “beautiful she has always been and how talented she was with skill set of typing over 100 words a minute when she was working.”
Hannah said the couple was impressed with his new skills and that his wife’s hair looked great.
The couple later returned to Delmar College to thank the staff.
