To ensure the tattoo looked exactly like the real birthmark, Derek Jr.’s mother took photos of the mark from several different angles. She told her son the photos were for a doctor, as the 8-year-old receives annual check-ups to monitor the large mark. Gibert then used these reference photos to proportionately place dots and trace the outline onto Prue’s skin.

The physical commitment required for this gesture was substantial, totaling 30 hours in the tattoo chair. Prue admitted he had no idea the process would be so extensive and painful, especially since he only had one other tattoo from two decades prior. During the first four-hour session, the artist completed only the outline, leaving Prue gritting his teeth in discomfort. He eventually learned that the rib cage area is among the most sensitive locations on the body for needlework.

Despite the intensity of the experience, Prue remained determined to finish the project to help his son feel more comfortable. He sat for sessions lasting up to six hours at a time, continuing until he or the artist needed to stop. He described the pain as bearable, utilizing topical freezing in some areas to manage the sensation. The ultimate goal remained clear throughout the ordeal: he wanted to show his son that it is perfectly fine to be different.

The big reveal took place at a hotel swimming pool, where Prue finally removed his shirt to show off the completed work. Derek Jr. was initially stunned and repeatedly asked his father if the mark was real. According to Prue, the boy smiled a lot and clearly felt good about the surprising gesture. In the days following the reveal, the son frequently asked to see the tattoo, seemingly in disbelief that his father now shared his unique marking permanently.

Reflecting on the experience, Prue noted that the process was deeply rewarding for him as a parent. He expressed that no parent enjoys seeing their child struggle with self-consciousness, and he felt grateful for the opportunity to intervene.
