WOMAN FOUND NOT GUILTY AFTER CLAIMING COVID MADE HER KILL DAUGHTER AND STAB LOVED ONES
A Miami-Dade Circuit Judge recently reached a notable verdict in a complex criminal case involving a South Florida mother. Precious Bland, 38, faced multiple charges following a violent 2021 incident that resulted in the death of her 15-month-old daughter. After a bench trial, the court found Bland not guilty by reason of insanity.
The tragic events took place on the night of August 23, 2021, at a residence in West Little River. According to police reports, Bland began exhibiting signs of severe mental distress while her family suffered from COVID-19 infections. She reportedly told family members that “Jesus Christ is coming and COVID is going to kill us all” before the situation escalated.
Defense attorney Larry Handfield argued that Bland suffered a psychotic episode triggered by her illness. He explained that his client experienced “command hallucinations” during the ordeal. These voices allegedly instructed her to perform baptisms on her family members in the bathtub. This temporary insanity meant she did not understand the consequences of her actions.
The arrest report details a harrowing struggle within the home as Bland attempted to carry out these perceived commands. She held her toddler underwater until the child became unresponsive and then attacked her husband with a knife when he tried to intervene. While the husband and their 16-year-old daughter survived their stab wounds, the toddler was later pronounced dead at a local medical center.
This ruling may represent a legal milestone in the United States. Handfield told reporters he believes this is the first successful insanity defense linked to the virus in the country. He cited medical research suggests a small percentage of patients may experience paranoia or suicidal thoughts after contracting the virus.
Following the acquittal in June 2026, the court must now determine the next steps for Bland’s care. Judge Miguel de la O scheduled an assessment hearing to decide if she requires commitment or further mental health treatment. For the time being, the judge allowed Bland to remain at her home while awaiting that final determination.
