SNAPCHAT CEO EVAN SPIEGEL AND MODEL MIRANDA KERR HAVE ERASED $550 MILLION IN MEDICAL DEBT FOR OVER 260,000 CALIFORNIANS
Snap CEO Evan Spiegel and his wife, supermodel and KORA Organics founder Miranda Kerr, have announced a significant philanthropic effort to support residents across California. The couple made a multimillion-dollar donation to Undue Medical Debt, a nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating healthcare-related financial burdens. This contribution effectively erases $550 million in medical debt for more than 261,000 people living in the state.
The 2026 announcement addresses a critical issue as one in four American adults currently face medical debt. According to Allison Sesso, the President and CEO of Undue Medical Debt, this crisis frequently undermines mental health and economic wellbeing. The nonprofit operates by purchasing medical debt in large bundles from hospitals and collection agencies at a significant discount, allowing small donations to have a massive impact.
Miranda Kerr expressed that the goal of the donation is to allow families to focus on healing rather than financial stress. The relief specifically helps individuals who earn at or below 400% of the federal poverty level or those whose medical debt exceeds 5% of their total income. Recipients do not need to apply for this relief, as the organization identifies eligible accounts through the debt it acquires in bulk.
San Diego County residents will see the largest benefit, with roughly $99 million in debt cleared for more than 40,000 individuals. In Los Angeles County, the donation provides $26.7 million in relief to over 17,000 residents. Those affected by the contribution will begin receiving notification letters in the mail starting in mid-July to inform them that their debt has been cleared.
This gesture follows a history of charitable giving from the couple, including their 2022 decision to pay off student loans for the graduating class at Otis College of Art and Design. Spiegel also recently contributed to the Department of Angels to assist with recovery efforts after the 2025 Los Angeles County wildfires. Spiegel noted that unexpected medical bills can create years of financial stress for families already facing the rising cost of living in California.
