TikTokers Are Using Toxic Masculinity To Trick Anti-Maskers Into Wearing Masks

Now that some people have firmly planted themselves in the anti-mask category no matter how much science is thrown at them, we have to come up with different ways to try to convince them to wear a mask to protect others and help the whole of society work towards eventually overcoming this pandemic.

We’ve already seen masks turned into gun holsters as a way to combat the common anti-masker sentiment that masks make you look “weak,” and we’ve even seen Trump fans switch their opinions on masks once the president finally wore one in public a couple of times, as they decided he looked “presidential” and “badass” doing so.

But what if we’re looking at it all wrong? What if we need to convince anti-maskers that NOT wearing a mask is actually representative of all the things they fear?

A TikTok user came up with one way to accomplish this, and it’s both hilarious and very, very sad.

“I was just at the grocery store, and I saw a guy there not wearing a mask, so I walked up to him and I said, ‘Hey, are you coming out tonight?’” @spencelogan_ recounted in a video last month.

“And he said, ‘What? What are you talking about?’ And I was like, ‘Are you coming to The Hole tonight?’ And he was like, ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, you’re not…Okay, I get it. Sorry, it’s just like, I’m gay, and in our community, we don’t wear masks properly to let others know we’re down to hook up.’”

“And he put his mask on,” he confirmed. “That’s how we win this game, guys, we gotta use the toxic masculinity against them.”

While Logan has since made his TikTok account private, other users have taken his audio to share this strategy with their own followers.

While it’s totally messed up that 1) people are still refusing to wear masks, and 2) homophobia can be so intense that it overcomes #1, using homophobes’ homophobia against them to try to bring this pandemic to an end at some point in the ideally near future might be something to consider next time you see some dudebro out in the wild without his mask on.
