The proposed treatment involves administering drugs that inhibit the release of certain hormones. MP Simona Bonafè of the Democratic Party argued that the measure undermines a legal system that moved away from corporal punishment centuries ago. Other critics questioned if the government might eventually return to even more archaic punishments like those seen in medieval times.
Legal experts and feminist groups have expressed their own concerns regarding the effectiveness of this approach. While countries like Russia and Poland allow mandatory chemical castration, critics often cite potential physical and psychological side effects.
