A card shop in Oregon has suspended its Yu-Gi-Oh! tournaments after complaints about “poor hygiene” from players
Chronos Games & Gifts, a gaming shop in Beaverton, Oregon, recently took a firm stance on a persistent problem within the competitive card game community. The store announced a weeklong pause on its weekly tournaments following significant complaints regarding the personal cleanliness of certain participants. Management cited recurring issues with body odor and the mistreatment of the store’s restroom facilities as the primary reasons for the suspension.
The business shared the announcement through its public Discord channel to inform regular players of the change. In the statement, the store noted that they received multiple negative reviews specifically focused on poor hygiene. To address the situation, the shop owners encouraged players to adhere to official guidelines from Konami, the publisher of the Yu-Gi-Oh! trading card game.
Hygiene has become a formal concern for major tournament organizers in recent years. In 2019, Konami updated its official tournament guide to mandate that all attendees maintain a clean appearance and wear laundered clothing. The publisher noted that neglecting self-care creates an unpleasant atmosphere for other guests in crowded venues. Under these rules, tournament staff can penalize individuals or ask them to correct the issue before they continue playing.
This focus on presentation extended into subsequent years to protect the reputation of the hobby. The Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG World Championship 2025 Tournament Policy explicitly highlights the importance of grooming for high-profile events. Because these competitions reach hundreds of thousands of viewers through global livestreams, the policy requires duelists to be showered and appropriately groomed. Such measures help ensure that the event remains professional for both on-site attendees and digital audiences.
Other gaming communities have also enforced similar standards to maintain a welcoming environment. In 2025, the Nebraska Pokemon Organized Play group reminded its community that the official handbook requires a socially acceptable level of hygiene. Tournament organizers have the authority to remove any participant who refuses to comply with these cleanliness or attire standards. These rules prioritize the comfort of the collective group over the preferences of an individual.
Community members in Oregon have largely supported the store’s decision to enforce these policies. Local attendees expressed their approval of the temporary suspension as a way to improve the shop’s atmosphere. By pausing the events, Chronos Games & Gifts aims to reset expectations for future gaming sessions and ensure a better experience for all guests.
