SCOTTISH GRAN, 78, BECAME OLDEST FEMALE FORTNITE STREAMER

A Scottish grandmother proved her grandson wrong and became the oldest female Fortnite streamer on Twitch, Guinness World Records said.

Cath Bowie, 78, was named the record holder in a profile published on September 24, 2026. She streams under the username “grumpygran1948” and has more than 24,000 followers.

It all started with a bit of doubt from her grandson. He couldn’t believe his grandmother would play Fortnite and suggested nobody would watch her stream.

“Saying that was like a red rag to a bull to me. I would show him that I could do it. 24,000+ followers later and he doesn’t mention it. I wonder why?” Bowie said.

From watching her grandson to streaming herself

Bowie first saw her grandson playing Fortnite in 2017, the same year the game’s Battle Royale mode launched. She said she was “instantly intrigued.”

She made her own account in 2018 and began streaming.

Her granddaughter came up with the username as a joke. Bowie said she doesn’t actually grump.

Fortnite is the only game that has ever grabbed her this way. “Although I have tried several other games I have never found the excitement that I get from Fortnite. I call myself a ‘Fortniter’ more than a gamer,” she said.

Guinness said she regularly streams for hours at a time.

Bowie doesn’t chase conventional wins. She sets a goal for each game and plays to challenge herself.

“I do it for me and to chat with my lovely supporters,” she said.

She said she has not been disappointed with her performance. She also thanked her family for their encouragement and the friends she has played with.

Age has never slowed her down. “Nearly nine years later I am still playing it, still absolutely loving it and although still growing older I have never made my age a deterrent,” Bowie said.

Her advice to anyone watching is blunt. “NEVER let age stop you. If I can do it so can you.”

“The most important thing of all is that in all these years I have continued to enjoy every day, every week, every month and every year that I have played and streamed,” she said.

Her sign-off looked ahead: “Roll on towards 80!!”

What happened next

Bowie’s story also appears in Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition 2027, BBC News reported.

The same Guinness article profiles Max Baker, who set the record for youngest game developer (male) at a library in Penarth, UK, in May 2025. He is also in the book.

The biggest name to weigh in so far is Epic Games. IGN reported on September 28, 2026 that Epic Games described Bowie as a “goat.”
