VIRAL RED BARON WORKER PAUSES GOFUNDME AT $787K

Walter E. Zerod, a Red Baron pizza delivery and stocking worker, is officially pausing his viral GoFundMe after receiving more than $787,000 in donations. The father of four announced on November 5, 2026, that he is stepping away from the spotlight to focus on his family following a massive wave of internet support.

In late October, footage circulated of Zerod confronting an Instagram prankster who pretended to take $10 from him using an Apple Pay-like payment sound while he was working in a grocery store freezer aisle. During the prank on camera, an exhausted Zerod snapped, explaining he was working long hours just to pay his mortgage and support his children.

The video sparked immediate backlash against the prankster and a massive outpouring of kindness for Zerod. An Arizona man named Luke Oakenshield, who did not personally know Zerod at the time, launched a campaign titled “Support a Harassed Red Baron Worker,” according to The Detroit News. By early November, the effort had collected over $787,000 from more than 22,000 donations, Dexerto reported.

In a GoFundMe update on November 5, 2026, Zerod shared that he was pausing the donations and declining all media requests.

“Your kind words have meant the world to my family and I this past week,” Zerod wrote. “I still cannot believe how much you have all rallied behind us, and I can never thank you enough.”

He noted that the financial security has already allowed him to spend lots of extra time at home with his family.

“After giving it a lot of thought, I’ve decided not to participate in any interviews,” he added. “My family’s safety and privacy come first, and I feel this is the best decision for us.”

The story also brought a life-changing twist for Oakenshield. When supporters discovered the man behind the fundraiser was a homeless veteran living out of his car, a friend launched a separate campaign to help Oakenshield secure housing.

Zerod said he has stayed in touch with Oakenshield and looks forward to their ongoing friendship. For those who still want to give, Zerod encouraged supporting local charities or churches helping families in need this holiday season.

“Thank you for your kindness, your generosity, and for making my family feel so supported,” Zerod said in his final update. “We will never forget it.”
