A Zuckerberg spokesperson confirmed the purchase. “Mark and his family are excited to continue caring for this historic home and look forward to spending time in Ireland, where Meta maintains its international headquarters,” spokesperson Brian Baker told People.

A spokesman likewise called the couple “excited,” Yahoo News reported.

What the castle is

Strancally Castle sits in Knockanore, County Waterford, on the banks of the River Blackwater.

The estate covers 440 acres, and the house is roughly 16,000 square feet.

The castle was designed by architects James and George Richard Pain and built around 1830 for John Keily, a former Conservative MP, RTÉ reported.

The property had undergone a full restoration over about 20 years, The Irish Times reported.

What happened next

The castle and estate were first estimated to sell for €20 million to €30 million. The Irish Times said that estimate rested on the quality of the residence and its restoration.

The registered price came in far higher, close to double the estimate at the time of sale, The Irish Times said. It said the figure covers the principal residence and up to one acre of land.

The sale was the highest price paid for a single residential property in Ireland that year, The Economic Times reported.

The paper also reported that the couple pledged €150,000 to Shamrocks GAA in Knockanore, Tallow GAA in Tallow and Lismore GAA in Lismore.

Zuckerberg and Chan are expected to keep living in the United States and use the castle during visits to Ireland, The Irish Times reported.

On October 7, 2026, Ireland’s Residential Property Price Register showed that the couple paid €51,171,155 for Strancally Castle, with the sale dated August 17, 2026, RTÉ reported.
