The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is currently tracking a rise in cases of an intestinal parasite across the United States. As of mid-June 2026, federal health officials confirmed 145 cases of cyclosporiasis. These infections appear in 17 different states, including locations ranging from Texas to Alaska. Investigations show that patients acquired all these infections within the country.
The illness stems from Cyclospora, a microscopic parasite that targets the digestive system. The hallmark symptom of the infection is watery and often ‘explosive’ diarrhea. This symptom can persist for weeks or even months if the patient does not receive proper medical treatment. Other common signs of the infection include severe abdominal cramping, bloating, and nausea.
Patients often report significant fatigue and weight loss during the course of the illness. The official outbreak season for this parasite runs annually from May 1 through August 31. Health officials note that warmer temperatures historically coincide with a spike in these specific infections. While some cases clear up without intervention, many patients require antibiotics to recover fully.
Data from 2026 shows that New York has the highest concentration of cases, reporting between 31 and 80 incidents. Texas and Illinois follow, with each state reporting between 11 and 30 cases. The CDC reports that 20 patients required hospitalization due to the severity of their symptoms. Fortunately, the investigation has not recorded any deaths related to this specific surge.
The age of affected patients varies widely, ranging from 5 to 86 years old. The median age of those infected is 42, and women represent 61% of the reported cases. The CDC and the Food and Drug Administration are currently investigating several multi-state clusters. However, they have not yet identified a single product or event that links all these cases together.
