MICHIGAN PARENTS CHARGED WITH MURDER IN DEATH OF 255 POUND 7-YEAR-OLD SON

Prosecutors in Flint Township, Michigan, have filed serious criminal charges against two parents following the death of their 7-year-old son. Damien O’Brien and Jessica O’Brien now face counts of second-degree murder, child abuse, and torture. The charges stem from the 2025 death of their son, Casper, who reportedly weighed 255 pounds at the time of his passing.

The legal case highlights significant health and neglect concerns regarding the young boy’s physical condition. Casper stood 4 feet, 2 inches tall, a height for which the CDC suggests a healthy weight range of 50 to 73 pounds. Prosecutors state that Casper’s final weight was nearly four times the upper limit of that recommendation.

Authorities first became aware of the situation on November 4, 2025, when a 911 call reported a child in distress. Emergency responders rushed the 7-year-old to a local hospital for treatment. Medical professionals later determined that Casper died from dilated cardiomyopathy, with morbid obesity listed as a contributing cause.

Following an investigation, prosecutors released details concerning the child’s daily life and home environment. Legal filings allege that the parents fed their son a diet consisting primarily of French fries and chips. Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton told local media that the case involves extreme neglect that led to the child’s decline.

Investigation records suggest that the O’Briens maintained a highly isolated household for their children. Prosecutors claim the parents never enrolled Casper in school and essentially kept him and his 5-year-old sister hidden from the government. This lack of public record or institutional involvement delayed any intervention from outside authorities.

The O’Briens are currently scheduled to appear in court on July 2 to address these severe allegations. This case continues to draw attention to the responsibilities of caregivers and the legal definitions of medical neglect.
