Madi Ann Kohout, 19, shared her strange story on TikTok; she moved from Oklahoma to Arkansas to start fresh but mistakenly moved into a complex for senior citizens.
She shared the story on TikTok and the video has gone viral with over 650,000 likes.
In the video, she captions “me getting ready to move to an apartment out of state that I’ve never seen…” while looking quite pleased with the establishment.
But she quickly realizes she made a mistake….
Kohout spoke with Insider about being a teen living in a retirement facility and how she made the mistake.
“The rent was significantly cheaper compared to where I had moved from,” Kohout told Insider. “I was able to lease a two-bedroom for only $350 a month. It was super spacious and felt like home.”
She found the place online and moved in a few days later, only seeing it in person during move-in.
“When I went out to my car, I started meeting some of my neighbors. To my surprise, they were all over the age of 65,” she said.
“A week later, I saw the sign reading ‘Senior Citizen Apartments.’ I realized I accidentally moved into a retirement village,” Kohout said.
She told Newsweek that she moved into an equal-opportunity building — that is, it wouldn’t discriminate based on age — but it was clearly designed for seniors. She is “the only teenager in sight.”
She has also made a follow-up video detailing what it’s like living there. There are some serious perks and it sounds like she’s living her best life. Her neighbors are friendly and cook for her!
“I’ve never had so many home-cooked meals in my life,” she said.
“I am taking each and every moment as an opportunity to learn,” she said.
“Remember, if you’re struggling with rent, start your early retirement,” she joked in the video.
