3 BIBLES SURVIVED THE FIRE THAT DAMAGED A TEXAS HOME

Three Bibles survived a Texas house fire that badly damaged a family’s home while they vacationed in Colorado.

The blaze significantly damaged the Coleman County home of Amy McMillan, her husband Steven and their son, who were all away when it broke out. It was reported on June 30, 2026.

McMillan said the first sign of trouble came through her security cameras. “We left on Father’s Day. My cameras cut off a little after three o’clock. That’s when I started receiving phone calls,” she told KTXS.

She said she believes the fire started in a bedroom and most likely came from an electrical source. That was her own assessment, and she said the fire had not really been investigated at the time of her interview.

“I think it started in the bedroom. We don’t know what caused the fire, but it most likely originated from an electrical source. It hasn’t really been investigated. I know that no one was on our property because we have cameras installed. It was not caused by a gas leak or arson,” McMillan said.

What the fire took, and what it left behind

The family lost animals in the fire. “My son had four kittens and a mother cat. They did not make it out alive,” McMillan said.

The family’s other animals were safe, she said. That included Rocky, the family dog, who escaped from his cage in the front yard and survived.

McMillan said she was shocked that Rocky got out in time.

Then came the discovery that gave the story its hook. “We did some digging and we actually found our Bibles. There are three of them. They’re a little wet, but they survived the fire,” she said.

Her son’s Bible made it through the smoke, Local 12 reported.

McMillan said the contrast was hard to miss. “It’s just ironic that the important things survived and the material objects were destroyed.”

She said the family’s faith and being together mattered more to them than a house or any possessions. “I’m just glad that we have each other,” she said.

Local 12 reported that McMillan held back tears as she described the family’s gratitude.

What happened next

The McMillans had no insurance in place, which left them without that safety net as they faced rebuilding.

Their community moved to fill the gap. KTXS reported that a bake sale was set for July 4, 2026, and a brisket dinner fundraiser for July 11, 2026, with proceeds meant to benefit the family.

Double Dog Coffee also hosted a raffle for the family. A GoFundMe page was set up to help with their recovery.

The McMillans were staying at a local inn while they began the work of rebuilding, Local 12 reported.
