WAITRESS WHO SERVED RUDE REGULAR GOT $50,000 IN HIS WILL
A Texas waitress who kept smiling at a cursing, cantankerous customer for years got $50,000 and a car in his will.
Melina Salazar worked at a Luby’s cafeteria in Brownsville, Texas, where she served Walter “Buck” Swords for nearly seven years. Swords, 89, a World War II veteran, died in July 2007.
Salazar described him as “kind of mean” in an interview with Harlingen station KGBT-TV, the Associated Press reported.
His will left her $50,000 and a 2000 Buick.
The customer nobody wanted
Swords was not an easy man to feed. He made demands, and he cursed at the staff.
He also wanted his food very hot, even when it burned his mouth. InspireMore quoted Salazar on his orders: “He wanted the food very hot – he didn’t care, he burned himself!”
Salazar was the only server willing to regularly wait on him, Economic Times reported. The outlet also reported that Swords never left her a tip.
She kept smiling and serving him anyway.
What happened next
Swords died in July 2007, and Salazar did not hear about the will right away. She learned only a few days before Christmas, several months after his death, the Associated Press reported.
The news was a double surprise: cash and a car from the customer who had given her the hardest time.
“I still can’t believe it,” Salazar told KGBT-TV.
A post from Historic Vids on X said the bequest was reportedly a thank-you for her patience and kindness. The post named the restaurant as a Luby’s Cafeteria in Brownsville.
Her advice to other servers was short. “Just smile and be nice,” she said, Newsner reported.
The story resurfaced on X in a post dated August 13, 2026, and went viral, Economic Times reported. Reaction online was mixed.
