Ted Cruz has yet again incurred the wrath of the internet for something he could have simply not said at all in an attempt to pander to his rightwing base.
The Texas Senator replied to a tweet from ABC about unemployment benefits from the pandemic era coming to an end, callously remarking that people ABC notes as having “few options” should just “get a job.”
Many, if not most, unemployed Americans would love a job, but anyone in touch with the reality of everyday American life when you’re not a rich, pampered politician knows it isn’t as simple as Cruz makes it out to be.
While businesses are facing a shortage of workers, it’s already been established that’s in no small part due to their unwillingness to pay livable wages or take COVID safety precautions seriously. There are also matters of accessibility, skill, and scheduling to be taken into consideration when going out to get a job.
But it’s much easier to just pretend like struggling Americans are lazy and stupid, as that feeds into the narrative Republicans push denouncing programs that actually help people and pretending businesses are doing everything right.
Of course, folks online would never let Cruz’s comments stand unchallenged, and the responses poured in.
