With the grand jury decision in the Breonna Taylor case being announced, protesters around the country stood in solidarity with the Louisville Black Lives Matter and held protests in major cities. In Seattle, the protests were attempted to be quelled by police, and one of the officers was filmed riding a bike over an injured protester’s head.
The video shows a large group of police officers charging towards protesters and as the camera moves with the officers, a man with a white helmet can be seen laying on the ground as they move closer to the group. Without hesitating, a biked police officer runs over the protester’s head and doesn’t stop.
The officer doesn’t try to move out of the way and continues to step over the person’s head after running over it. Once the video was shared on Twitter, it quickly started to go viral.
It currently has over three million views and over 14,000 likes. As it started to be seen by millions, the Seattle Police Department released a statement saying, “In addition to this, the Seattle Police Department is aware of a video circulating on the internet that apparently shows an SPD bike officer’s bike rolling over the head of an individual laying in the street. This matter will be referred to the Office of Police Accountability for further investigation.”
The SPD has yet to identify the officer but has agreed to allow the OPA to have an “outside law enforcement agency,” investigate. People have identified the victim protester as “the trumpet man,” who often attends protests in Seattle and Portland playing his trumpet to cheer up the crowd. While he wasn’t seriously injured, he was apparently arrested for seemingly no reason.
On Twitter, many replied to the video in disgust calling for the police officer to be held accountable.
This guy needs to lose his job and be prosecuted. He deliberately swerved so he would run over the guy’s head.— RN Mindy: Wash hands, distance & wear mask! (@StLMindyF) September 24, 2020
There is absolutely no excuse for this outrageous behavior. The mayor and council should demand immediate prosecution and removal.— jason ????????☕????????????????????️????……………. (@jasoncostner) September 24, 2020
As a former military officer, I'm completely baffled as to why any police chief would tolerate am animal like this officer working in their organization.— Kevin Adams (@KvnJAdms) September 24, 2020
Just a testament to decades of near-zero individual or organizational consequences for criminal activity by cops.
