Right-wing activist Laura Loomer spent a lot of time undermining masks and spouting anti-vaccine sentiment before she finally came down with COVID-19 herself—then her tune changed. The 28-year-old is begging people to pray for her because the virus is so awful, though she previously claimed it was less serious than food poisoning.
Loomer wrote on Gettr, a platform created by Trump’s former spokesman Jason Miller, that she was experiencing brutal body aches and nausea.
“Just pray for me please. Can’t even begin to explain how brutal the body aches and nausea that come with covid are. I am in so much pain. This is honestly the worst part about it.”
That’s a very different message from an earlier post, in which she wrote, “I hope I get COVID just so I can prove to people I’ve had bouts of food poisoning that are more serious and life-threatening than a hyped-up virus. Have you ever eaten bad fajitas? That will kill you faster than COVID.”
She has been updating her followers with info about her condition and treatment, writing on Telegram that she has received Regeneron, Azithromycin, and Hydroxychloroquine and wants the de-wormer ivermectin. A number of these treatments were circulated as advisable by conservative message boards and even former president Donald Trump, but several of them have not been approved for treatment of the virus.
To be fair, Loomer has also said that was once hospitalized for food poisoning, so maybe she really did think it was worse than COVID. But I doubt she took horse medicine or other experimental treatments to get through her bad fajita experience. There are a number of asymptomatic cases out there, but being asymptomatic doesn’t prevent you from spreading the virus to others (it probably makes it more likely) and there’s no guarantee that even a young, healthy person won’t be severely affected.
Loomer has said she’s still not planning to get the vaccine.
“I have COVID, and I don’t regret not taking the vaccine. I will never take the vaccine. I will now have natural immunity, Regeneron antibodies, and within a few days of rest along with my ZPACK, the HCQ, combined vitamin supplements (zinc, C, D, NAC), and hopefully some ivermectin soon, I’m confident I will have a speedy recovery,” she wrote on Telegram.
Maybe she’ll be like all the other conservative pundits out there who say they don’t believe in vaccines, but quietly get them behind the scenes. Even Trump is pro-vaccine now, but he’s already gotten his following turned against them. It’s unfortunate that many of them will have to suffer from Covid themselves before understanding what Loomer now knows.
