It’s no secret that healthcare expenses in the United States are absolutely insane. But sometimes the specificities of how much certain things cost escape those of us who haven’t experienced it ourselves. Sometimes it feels like the best option in dealing with the American healthcare system is simply to ignore those insanely high numbers and hope you never find yourself in a place where you need to know the costs.

But for parents in this country, hitting up the hospital is often all but unavoidable as they welcome their new child into the world. And yes, even something that’s such a common part of life is astronomically expensive here.

TikTok user Ms. Lily Flowers wanted to find out exactly how expensive, and asked her followers a question that, even in its construction, highlights the failure of our healthcare system.

“How old was your baby when you paid off your hospital bill?” she asked, adding that hers is almost two years old.

The responses that rolled in were horrifying, with many saying it took years to pay off bills that were in the high four figures, at least, simply for the birth of their child — assuming they’ve been able to pay it off at all.

Some had particularly staggering bills, even upwards of a million dollars.

And many pointed out that some of these numbers are AFTER insurance stepped in and took care of a good chunk of it.

Meanwhile, people from other countries where healthcare services are often free are blown away by what Americans have to deal with.

Even the numbers that sound somewhat manageable have to be put in perspective — this is just how much having the baby at the hospital cost. Meaning, medical care leading up to it may not be wrapped up in those costs, not to mention the general expenses of prepping to bring a new child into your home.

It's incredible to think how much better off Americans might be if it weren't for astronomical healthcare costs. Incredible, and extremely, unendingly depressing.
