Iran’s goalkeeper in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) is named Zohreh Koudaei, and she’s really good at her job. Her team beat Jordan in a penalty shootout for the 2022 Women’s Asian Cup qualifier in September, according to India Times. Koudaei had two impressive saves and the winning score was 4-2. This will be the first time Iran participates in the Women’s Asian Cup.

Now, Jordan wants the AFC to investigate Koudaei because they believe she is a man posing as a woman to participate in the woman’s team. The president of the Jordan Football Association, Prince Ali Bin Al-Hussein, is demanding “gender verification” of the footballer. Verification isn’t mandatory, but they are technically allowed to ask.

The asking is causing quite an uproar because people think it’s a smear campaign coming from Jordan because they’re having a temper tantrum about losing. People online are trying to be supportive of Koudaei:

The Iranian team’s selector, Maryam Irandoost, said, “The medical staff have carefully examined each player on the national team in terms of hormones to avoid any problems in this regard, and so I tell all fans not to worry. We will provide any documentation that the Asian Confederation of Football wishes without wasting time.”

Irandoost added, “These allegations are just an excuse not to accept the defeat against the Iranian women’s national team. The Jordanian team considered themselves the big favorite to qualify… and when they lost… it was natural to seek relief under false pretenses and to escape responsibility for this failure.”

The Women’s Asian Cup is in a few months, and it’s not clear if Koudaei will be subjected to further “investigation,” whatever that means. Sore losers are the worst.
