Divorce lawyer Katie K. Leonard, founder and managing partner of The Leonard Firm in Atlanta, Georgia, went viral on TikTok after sharing the top five professions women should avoid in a husband based on her 13 years of experience as a divorce lawyer.
“Over the course of my career, I’ve watched my most difficult cases and, shockingly, many of them involved men in these five professions,” said the lawyer. She went on to add that there are outliers and even if someone is married to someone in these professions, it doesn’t mean the marriage is “doomed to failure.”
Before listing the top five worst professions to marry, she also mentioned the trend that she spotted amongst these men: she says they typically are more narcissistic and controlling.
The list, according to Leonard, in no particular order, is: firemen, police officers, military, surgeons, and pilots.
“They tend to be far more difficult in dealing with a divorce,” she said. “They have kind of a ‘nuke the earth, scorch the earth, how dare you challenge me’ kind of approach to litigation.”
“If you look at these professions, what do they all have in common?” she asked in the video. “The men in these professions, they’re gods in their profession, right?”
“[If] you’re a policeman, you’re walking around with a gun. You’re walking around with authority. If you’re a surgeon, you’re walking around the hospital. Everybody looks up to you, you’re in charge. Everybody treats you with respect. And then you come home, and all of a sudden, somebody’s asking you to take out the trash. I think that that’s a difficult kind of transition to make.”
She went on to add that pilots and military personnel tend to be “in control of like 150, 200 people’s lives at a time. They are treated with a tremendous amount of respect and they have a lot of responsibility. And they tend to be very narcissistic and very controlling.”
Leonard’s TikTok video has been viewed more than 1.6 million times, with 197k likes and over 13.8k comments.
Some users confirmed Leonard’s assessment, while others offered suggestions of other professions to avoid—and others that were safe.
Other suggestions of professions to avoid offered up in the comments include athletes, pastors, and simply doctors in general. One user commented simply, “Uniforms,” with a red flag emoji. The comment has over 18.6k likes.Â
One user commented, “Girls get y’all a farmer 10/10” to which the lawyer replied, “Yes! I believe this!!! This is one profession I have NEVER SEEN.”
Another positive recommendation from a user was engineers, calling them “the best men” and “the sweetest,” which Leonard agreed with as well.
In a follow-up TikTok, Leonard shared the number one top profession for women that men should avoid: stay-at-home moms.
She was extremely hesitant to share it because the answer was a contentious one, and she backed up the answer with the reason why stay-at-home moms are the most litigious in a divorce.
“When you’re divorcing a stay-at-home mom, they are paralyzed with fear, and rightfully so because their whole life is going to change,” Leonard said.
She went on to add that these women are faced with the reality that they’ll have to return to the workforce after a prolonged absence, and their financial stability is no longer there.
“There’s lots of things that they don’t know financially about what’s going on, and so they tend to stick their head in the sand and stall.”
This second video has been viewed over 4 million times, with nearly 300k likes and 17.8k comments, many of which are stay-at-home moms themselves agreeing with her.
