Plus-size model and body positivity influencer Riley Hemson is slamming clothing stores for not catering to bigger bodies. In an Instagram post, Hemson explained to her 400K followers that she tried to buy some new outfits for last-minute, but while shopping, she was hit with a sobering reminder.

While some clothing lines have tried to be more inclusive, Hemson said she was reminded “just how far we still have to go with size inclusivity.”

Hemson, who owns and operates a size-inclusive clothing brand called Remmie by Riley, added: “In the world, I have created for myself, we have made so many incredible steps for bigger bodies, I guess I had been in a comfy bubble. Shopping online with a handful of stores that stock my size, surrounded by brands and people who are making a change.”

Unfortunately, Hemson wasn’t able to shop at her usual online stores because there was no time for shipping. She said she went to “countless stores” and was “willing to pay whatever” to find the items she needed.

During the last-minute shopping trip, she said she found herself having to dig to the back of clothing racks to find bigger sizes. If her size wasn’t on the rack, she’d end up asking the shop assistants what size they go up to before getting her hopes up.

“I don’t know what I was surprised when basically none of the items went past my knees. Every other store was the same,” she said.

Hemson admitted she felt that familiar feeling rush over her, and was left embarrassed, disappointed, angry, and disheartened. She took a moment to collect herself before writing a note of encouragement to her “plus size besties out there.”

“I took a deep breath, remembered who I am and what I stand for,” she said. “To all my plus size besties out there, I’m with you—we deserve better. We deserve to be seen and heard. We deserve to be included. Clothes are meant to fit YOU; you’re not meant to fit into the clothes. I promise to keep using my platform to be the voice to push for the overdue change.”

The post recieved quite a bit of support from the model’s followers, with many people sharing their own experiences.

“This hit me so hard. I’m last-minute shopping for a trip too and found no clothing at all that fits my body. I cried so much this week,” one person wrote.

“Thank you for sharing! Why am I 26 (size 16-18) and still having the same issues I was having in high school!? Not good enough,” another commented.
