When it comes to Lizzo, you can love her or you can hate her but the Grammy Award-winning singer is still going to shine.
In a recent interview with People, Lizzo opened up about self-love, setting a new beauty standard, and the constant chatter about her body.
Being in the public eye comes with a lot of attention and even more criticism. Over the years, Lizzo has dealt with a barrage of fatphobic comments. Social media users have criticized the singer’s body, wardrobe choices, and actions.
But while she might not be everyone’s “ideal body type,” Lizzo said she’s stepping into her own standard of beauty.
“I think I have a really hot body! I’m a body icon, and I’m embracing that more and more every day,” she said.
“It may not be one person’s ideal body type just like, say, Kim Kardashian might not be someone’s ideal, but she’s a body icon and has created a modern-day beauty standard.”
“And what I’m doing is stepping into my confidence and my power to create my own beauty standard. And one day that will just be the standard,” she continued.
While chatting with the magazine, she also discussed the sterotypes she has encountered because of her size.
“The funny, fat friend. I played that trope in high school. Or the friend who is gonna beat your a– cause she’s big. Or it’s the big girl who’s insecure ’cause she’s big. I don’t think I’m the only kind of fat girl there is,” she said.
“I want us to be freed from that box we’ve been put in.”
The interview follows the 33-year-old’s earlier announcement about an exciting new project. Lizzo has joined forces with Amazon Studios and Prime Video to give life to Big Grrrls.
Big Grrrls is an unscripted competition series that follows “10 hopeful women moving into the Big Grrrls House, [as] they must prove they have what it takes to make it to the end and join Lizzo in front of a global audience on the center stage,” according to a press release.
The singer is an executive producer on the project, which is expected on March 25.
