Kylie Jenner is being called “tone deaf” for her social media posts about Ukraine.
The entrepreneur, who has been laying low since the birth of her son Wolf, wrote a post on Instagram that said, “God protect the people of Ukraine. My thoughts and prayers are with you.”
However, followers clicking through her story were greeted by a promotional post for Kylie Cosmetics’ new lip product. A video commercial for the gloss was shared to Kylie’s story, with a link for fans to buy the item. “My new @KylieCosmetics lip shine lacquers are here,” she wrote.
A TikToker shared a video recording of Kylie’s Instagram story, writing “Kylie cannot be f*cking serious rn…” They wrote in the caption: “I’m so sad for Ukraine! Anyways, my new lip shiners – “
Some people found the inclusion of the advertisement to be in bad taste, saying that Kylie was just doing business as usual.
Others took a more pragmatic approach, asking if people would like Kylie to join the army.
And one person reminded folks that the ad was probably pre-programmed and this was just a case of bad timing.
The TikToker doubled down in the comments section, writing: “All I’m gonna say is- look up the words ‘tone deaf’ for those of you who are defending someone who will never know you exist.”
Since last week, Ukraine has been facing attacks from Russian military, with explosions and airstrikes hitting the capital of Kyiv. Some Ukrainians have fled their homes and gone to the border searching for refuge while others have stayed to defend their country.
American celebrities such as Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively and Jennifer Aniston have used their platforms to raise money to aid Ukraine.
Kylie has been criticized for her public reaction to tragedy in the past. She and partner Travis Scott came under scrutiny after the Astroworld Festival tragedy, where 10 people were killed.
