Aaron Carter, child singer-turned-rapper, died of presently unknown causes on Saturday, November 5, 2022. He was reportedly found dead in the bathtub in his Lancaster, California home. He was only 34 years old and was the younger brother of Nick Carter, of Backstreet Boys fame.
Representatives from Carter’s team confirmed his death and added, “Right now it’s a really bad time, we’re trying to figure out what happened and what the cause of it was. We’re just as upset as everyone and hope that fans can give thoughts and prayers to his family.”
Police were called to the scene after they received a report of a drowning, and they are currently investigating the cause of death.
Singer and actress Hilary Duff, Carter’s ex-girlfriend from when they were teenagers, wrote a tribute to him on social media mourning his loss.
“For Aaron- I’m deeply sorry that life was so hard for you and that you had to struggle in-front of the whole world,” the 35-year-old actress wrote on Instagram. “You had a charm that was absolutely effervescent … boy did my teenage self love you deeply. Sending love to your family at this time. Rest easy.”
The pair first started dating when they were both 13 years old back in 2000 and had an off-again-on-again relationship for three years, until Carter broke the Lizzie McGuire actress’s heart as he started dating Lindsay Lohan as well.
“I just got a little bored, so I went and I started getting to know Lindsay, dating Lindsay,” Carter told CNBC’s The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch in 2005. He went on to say that Duff “really got her heart broken,” which he felt “sorry” about doing to her.
Back in 2014, Carter tweeted (and subsequently deleted) about his ex-girlfriend, saying, “I’ll spend the rest of my life trying to better myself to get back to her. I don’t care what ANY of you think.”
It seems that while Duff moved on from their complicated past, she wishes that things could have turned out differently for the boy she loved as an early teen.
