The teaser trailer of the new live-action The Little Mermaid movie remake has gotten the internet talking. Along with the adorable videos of little girls reacting to Halle Bailey’s appearance on screen (and the ridiculous arguments from white men who suddenly have an opinion about the color of mythical mermaids’ skin) came a slew of fancastings for the role of Prince Eric, with one name, in particular, standing out: Elliot Page.
Twitter user @EliErlick posted a collage of images that says, “Since they are already mad I got an idea” along with a screenshot of Prince Eric from the original 1989 film and a series of three photos of Elliot Page smoldering at the camera.
Responses to the original post were over the moon with the idea, pointing to his jaw line and other features, although some seemed to think the actor was too short of his hair too straight (???), nevermind that those things can be worked around in the film industry.
The overall consensus was that Elliot would be the perfect casting for Prince Eric, with over 23.1K retweets, 2,759 quote retweets, and 230.5K likes. Fans will be sad, though hopefully not for long, to know that the role of Prince Eric has already been taken by actor Jonah Hauer-King, and the principal photography has already finished on the film.
That doesn’t mean the fancasting is necessarily a bad one, and it’s wholly possible that Daddy Disney is making notes, and Elliot could be seen in a future princess movie remake. Until then, fans of the actor will have to content themselves with the latest season of Umbrella Academy, where Elliot plays Viktor (né Vanya) Hargreeves, as well as the many future projects he is sure to be featured in.
