In recent months, singer Demi Lovato has once again found a connection to their feminine side, to the point that they are once again using she/her pronouns along with they/them.
Lovato came out as nonbinary in May of 2021, saying at the time, “I want to take this moment to share something very personal with you.” They had been a journey of healing and self-reflection for a year and a half, and “through this work, I’ve had the revelation that I identify as nonbinary. […] I feel that this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am and still am discovering.”
But recently, the singer opened up on The Spout Podcast about their gender identity, telling the interviewer that they identify as both they/them and she/her since April of this year.
“I’m such a fluid person when it comes to my gender, my sexuality, my music, my creativity,” Demi said on the podcast.
They went on, “I felt like, especially last year, my energy was balanced in my masculine and feminine energy so that when I was faced with the choice of walking into a bathroom and it said women and men, I didn’t feel like there was a bathroom for me, because I didn’t feel necessarily like a woman, I didn’t feel like a man. I just felt like a human and that’s what they/them is about. For me, is just about like feeling human at your core.”
While the 29-year-old has been using both sets of pronouns since April, this is the first public announcement of the change since they came out in 2021 as nonbinary.
“Recently I’ve been feeling more feminine, and so I’ve adopted she/her again,” Lovato continued. “But, I think what’s important is, like, nobody’s perfect. Everyone messes up pronouns at some point, and especially when people are learning, it’s just all about respect.”
