People who have never worked in the customer service industry can’t appreciate how difficult these jobs are. Though servers and retail workers are taught that the customer is always right, people who have worked these gigs know that the customer is almost always wrong. Customer service jobs reveal the ugly side of humanity like nothing else can.
Which is probably why when Twitter user @Keally22 asked customer service workers to share “the complaint that broke” them, hundreds of people were quick to respond.
She shared her own story in the tweet, writing: “I’m 18, Red Robin host, Mother’s Day 10 min after open. Only 1 section open, I seat 3 families. Instantly cussed out hard bc I ruined Karen in white jeans Mother’s Day bc they could see other people from their table.” Doesn’t sound like a mom I’d like to have.
She followed up with a different story, one that was too long to fit in a tweet and which she wrote up in the notes app instead. It’s a harrowing tale about a woman, a build-your-own pizza place, and several brown sauces.
But in fact, just about every one of these sordid tales is pretty harrowing, particularly for folks who know just how terrible working in customer service can be, because they’ve been there. Here are some of the worst customers people have had to deal with:
