Ford has hired back over 300 human engineers after Al failed to match their skills and experience “Artificial intelligence is a fantastic tool, but it’s only as good as the information you use to train it

Ford recently made a significant pivot in its approach to vehicle production and quality control. The automaker rehired hundreds of experienced human engineers to address shortcomings in its artificial intelligence systems. This move highlights a growing realization that automation cannot yet replace the deep institutional knowledge of veteran employees.

The company brought back approximately 300 veteran engineers to bolster its vehicle engineering division over the last few years. According to Charles Poon, Ford’s vice president of vehicle hardware engineering, the AI tools lacked the specific expertise that seasoned technicians possess. Many of these knowledgeable employees had left the company before they could properly train the machine learning systems.

This strategy helped Ford reach a major milestone in 2026. The company topped the JD Power U.S. Initial Quality Study for the first time since 2010. By pairing advanced technology with human oversight, the automaker successfully improved the reliability of its new vehicles across several key segments.

The rehired engineers now serve as internal auditors within the company. They conduct mandatory weekly design reviews to find and fix potential failure points before blueprints ever reach the factory floor. These specialists work outside of daily production schedules to ensure the highest standards of quality and safety.

Executives admit they previously placed too much faith in the standalone power of AI. Poon noted that the company mistakenly thought simply ingesting design requirements would result in a high-quality product. Instead, the firm discovered that AI is only as effective as the information provided by the most experienced individuals.

The shift toward human-led quality control is already impacting the company’s bottom line in 2026. CEO Jim Farley stated that the improvements helped reduce spending on warranty coverage and vehicle recalls. These cost reductions provide a significant financial boost as the company refines its manufacturing workflows with expert guidance.

Seven of Ford’s top 10 models now rank in the top three of their respective JD Power segments. Notable performers include the F-150, Mustang, and Super Duty, all of which led their categories for the second year in a row. This success suggests that while AI remains a valuable tool, human experience remains the heart of the automotive industry.
