Thanksgiving is going to be different this year, there’s no getting around that. But for the families who are still able to gather safely together for the holiday, and even those who will be celebrating via Zoom miles apart, food choice may be the easiest tradition to keep in tact.
There are a few Thanksgiving dishes that are commonly spotted in most homes during the festivities — turkey, potatoes of some sort, likely a pumpkin or perhaps apple pie. But every family seems to have at least one dish that is an absolute staple at their Thanksgiving dinner, but that’s a little weird to outsiders.
Last year, when everything was still normal, Maya Kosoff asked people on Twitter to share the strangest recipes that somehow always find their way onto their Thanksgiving tables.
“Ours is a wild creation called seafoam salad,” she wrote, alongside a photo of something that definitively does not look like food. “I thought this was a normal thing every family made and served for Thanksgiving next to the turkey and the stuffing until I was 18.”
The responses did not disappoint, with people tossing out everything from the slightly strange to the utterly bizarre, and it’s enough to make anyone second guess every single dish on their own table this Thanksgiving.
But hey, if you’re feeling adventurous, dive into this nightmare of a list and find some new creations to consume during the holiday — you never know what might become a classic new tradition at your own house.
