Trans man Bennett Kaspar-Williams got pregnant in March of 2020 with his husband Malik. The 37-year-old planned his pregnancy and required no medical intervention to get pregnant except going off his hormones, GreenLemon reports. Kaspar-Williams has been speaking very openly about his experience of being pregnant and giving birth as a man, and how he was constantly misgendered and called a “mom” during the process by nurses and doctors.
He said, “It’s so important that we stop defining ‘womanhood’ in terms of ‘motherhood’….The only thing that made me dysphoric about my pregnancy was the misgendering that happened to me when I was getting medical care for my pregnancy. The business of pregnancy and yes, I say business because the entire institution of pregnancy care in America is centered around selling this concept of motherhood.”
Bennett has had top surgery and his hormones have changed his appearance, aiding him in growing a beard and changing his features. That was part of the reason he was so surprised that the misgendering continued to happen. Bennet had his baby by C-section in October of 2020. He says anyone going through this as a trans person would be put in an awkward situation by people lacking awareness of the issue.
“It’s so intertwined with a gender that it was hard to escape being misgendered,” he said to the Daily Mail. “That was what made me dysphoric. Nothing about being pregnant felt feminine to me – in fact, I think carrying a child isolated due to the pandemic and facing all the hospitals and appointments alone was the absolute toughest, bravest thing I’ve ever done.”
Malik and Bennet plan to explain to their son, who they named Hudson, that it was one of his dads who carried and birthed him. The couple met in 2017, and married in 2019.
