Imagine using DNA to track dog poop. Well, according to one TikToker, this is the case at her apartment complex. TikToker Kallie (@kallieslayed) said that her apartment complex is demanding that all residents’ dogs be DNA-tested in order to hold those who don’t pick up their dog’s poop accountable.

The video was posted Wednesday. In it, Kallie says that she received a notice from the complex saying it will be implementing a PooPrints program.

“We are unable to keep up with the un-scooped dog waste and are taking immediate corrective action,” the notice reads.

According to its website, PooPrints is a company that advocates for safe waste removal. They collect DNA from dog cheek swabs to create a “genetic database” of dog identities. If pet waste is found, it can be collected and used to determine who the sloppy dog owner is. And presumably then they will be shamed.

In Kallie’s video, she says that the notice states the owner can be fined $150 or have their rental agreement canceled if they don’t comply.

Jay Retinger, the CEO of PooPrints, told the Daily Dot that people are “blown away” by the business. “It’s so funny to see the spectrum of thoughts and takes on the program. Is it big brother? Are we the poop police? Is it environmental protection? There’s so many different opinions.”

“Honestly I couldn’t believe the announcement when I read it, I thought it was an April Fools prank,” Kallie told the Daily Dot. “DNA swabbing dogs seems like something straight out of a Black Mirror episode!”

However, Kallie does sympathize. “I get why management would go this route, scare tactic or not. All I know is my cat and I will be laughing at all the lazy dog owners who live at my complex,” she said.
