HAYDEN PANETTIERE’S DEATH AT 36 RULED ACCIDENTAL

The Hayden Panettiere death in South Carolina has been ruled an accident caused by multiple drugs, including fentanyl, TMZ reported.

Panettiere, 36, died on August 16, 2026, in Greenville, South Carolina. Reuters reported she was found unresponsive at an apartment complex and pronounced dead at the scene.

Her father, Skip Panettiere, announced her death on August 17, 2026, in a statement provided by her publicist. “It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden,” the statement read, BBC reported.

What officials said at the time

Paramedics were called to Judson Mill Lofts, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The Greenville County Coroner’s Office said emergency crews responded to a reported “cardiac arrest.” Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful, the office said.

An autopsy found “no signs of trauma were discovered that would have contributed to the death,” the coroner’s office said.

Police said early on that there was nothing suspicious. “The preliminary investigation has not indicated any signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances,” the Greenville Police Department said.

The cause and manner of death were listed as pending further investigation and additional studies.

TMZ first reported that a friend found her dead inside a South Carolina home. The outlet said emergency services received a call describing a person in “cardiac arrest” and an “unresponsive female.”

Reuters reported that a 911 call excerpt showed medics telling a dispatcher they were responding to an “overdose” and attempting resuscitation.

Who she was

Panettiere played a cheerleader with superpowers in “Heroes” and a country music star in “Nashville.” Reuters described her as a two-time Golden Globe nominee.

She released a memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning,” in May 2026. It covered childhood stardom, trauma around her daughter’s birth, postpartum depression and alcohol addiction, Reuters reported.

Actors and others paid tribute after her death. BBC reported that fellow actors called her an “amazing talent” and “so gifted.”

Michelle Rodriguez also weighed in on how many young stars are dying after Panettiere’s passing.

The ruling

On October 14, 2026, TMZ reported that Greenville County officials ruled her death an accident caused by the toxic effects of multiple drugs, including fentanyl.

TMZ said the drugs included fentanyl, alprazolam, a muscle relaxer, and a medication used to treat major depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.
